Name of book: Islam: The Choice of Thinking Women Author: Ismail Adam Patel Publisher: Taha Publishers Edition: 1997 Pages: 115
This book is no ordinary script on the status of women in Islam as it seeks to dispel criticism often made by the west and unfortunately some Muslims on the issues of feminism, women’s rights, gender equality, etc. A kind of complex has developed in the minds of Muslim women that makes them feel inferior. The perception that Muslim women are oppressed and kept in some form of captivity with restricted movement, which the west believes, are some of the issues discussed in the book. Hence the position and status of Muslim women in society is introduced as one of the major topics that have been intellectually addressed by the author. The book makes an excellent reader for the non-Muslim in understanding the great dignity with which Islam treats women. Many distortions on the subject of women in Islam have been cleared and demystified. The writer has gone to great lengths in his research and provides accurate explanations so as to make the reader understand clearly.
