Low-key response to Zimbabwe strike
Harare: Fears of a government crackdown appears and the need to earn a day’s salary discouraged large-scale participation in a planned general strike in Zimbabwe on Tuesday.

Army trucks, some equipped with water cannon, moved through opposition strongholds around the capital Harare and riot police and other officers set up checkpoints.

But Banks, shops and offices in downtown Harare remained open as the strike call by the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) appeared to have little effect.

MDC opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and his supporters were hoping Zimbabweans would support the general strike.

On Monday, a court rejected Tsvangirai's bid to force authorities to release the election results.
