What Kind of a Person is this?

The attribute (quality) of kindness is a superb characteristic of a human being.

The compassion exemplified by our beloved Nabi (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) is the most unique among the human race. How fortunate are we, the honoured Ummatis, to be guided and taught about the beautiful teachings of Nabi (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) and the lives of the Sahaba Kiraam (RA).

Sympathy and gentleness is applicable to all facets of life. This gem of a quality has to be an inseparable part of our daily living. However, one particular hadith discusses the person who engages in purchasing and selling (trading) and displays kindheartedness and great consideration is shielded under the mercy of Allah Ta’ala.

Nabi (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) is reported to have stated :
“Allah is merciful upon a person who is kind when he buys, sells and requests for what is due to him.” (Bukhari Shareef)

What a “loaded simplicity” --- Just being humble and sympathetic when trading? Whenever a trader does a transaction, he handles it with care, speaks to the fellow salesmen with goodness and with the best of Akhlãq. As for the communication with the buyer, the trader speaks gently and displays great respect and dignity to him. And when he requests what is due to him, he does so in a most calm and friendly manner.

Even the explanation he provides to the buyer regarding the good/s being sold, is done with care, gentleness and honesty. He also tells the buyer about the different uses of the item and offers good wishes and expresses his gratitude to the buyer.

In similar fashion, when a person owes money to someone, he treats the debtor respectfully, and when requesting payment, it is handled with great caution.

This is probably one of the greatest tests in a person’s life --- claiming his rightful dues (haq) with utmost kindness. Generally when the debtor is late and/or delays in payment then the situation can become quite ugly.

Hence, all the concerned parties need to be extremely careful if they are desirous of earning the mercy of Allah Ta’ala. Exercising patience and offering kind words before, during and after a transaction is immensely beloved to our Allah (Azza wa Jalla) --- hence, the concomitant loaded rewards.
