SUNNAH: Way of Life for a Muslim!

The beautiful practice of the noble Sunnah should be “strong blend” of both: the outward (extrinsic) and the internal (intrinsic). Unfortunately, many people have understood the imbibing of the dignified Sunnah of our beloved Nabi (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) as merely following the Mubarak (blessed) extrinsic actions only --- e.g. keeping the beard, wearing the trouser above the ankle, eating on the floor, etc. Surely these are great and blessed Sunnah practices --- there is, however, another important side to the equation.

Similarly, entering the home making salaam with a smile, entering the masjid with the right foot, eating with the right hand, doing all good actions with the right are indeed all the illuminating Sunnah of the Master, Nabi Muhammad (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam). However, the equation can only be completed if the internal (intrinsic) also goes through a thorough process of cleansing and purification (tazkiat-ul-quloob). In our enthusiasm and fervour to emulate the Sunnah practices we are sometimes “blinded” about the need to also change from within.

Our great intensity of feeling, belief, ardour and zeal -- which are indeed wonderful – unfortunately makes us forget about the internal (intrinsic) refinement. Some of the crucial and vital aspects that constitute the internal (intrinsic), are for example, maintaining a heart that is clean from malice, hatred, jealousy, as well as all other negativism and evil towards others.

The hurt and destruction caused by these ill-feelings, animosity and dirty images coupled with being unduly critical of others and playing a “hate-game” are potently poisonous and dangerously malignant. Yes, we are busy with our daily rituals and worship (‘ibadaat) … but we become unmindful of and oblivious to the injury we cause to others.

Turning a blind eye to this internal (intrinsic) refinement is fatal!

Being regular and punctual with practicing the Sunnah ensures that the ladder of progress never ends. This is without a doubt the miracle of practicing the Mubarak Sunnah of our beloved Nabi (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam), and the ways of the Sahaba (RA). The life of a Muslim is adorned and beautified by each and every Sunnah practice.

It is our eternal bliss and success!

Nabi (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam), by virtue of being the most beloved of Allah Ta’ala, enjoys an extremely close relationship with each one us … being members of his Ummat. This extra-ordinary intimacy and love that Nabi (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) has with each one of his Ummati, is undeniably unique.

Is it then not only just, right and fair that we also display our love towards him … both outwardly (extrinsically) and internally (intrinsically)?
