The Life after this Life

The following is an ongoing reminder to the Muslims: “Our real life is the life in the Hereafter.”

This was the unrelenting call by, and message of Nabi (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) and thereafter by the Sahaba (Radiyallahu ‘Anhum). Even to this day and age, our Ulama and pious elders continue their passionate persuasion about this temporary life as opposed to the eternal life in the hereafter.

Hazrat Mas’ood bin Shaddad (Radiyallahu ‘Anhu) reports to have heard Nabi (Salallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) saying: “By Allah! The life of this world in comparison to the Hereafter is like when a person places his finger into the ocean and when he removes it (finger), he observes what has come with it (i.e. how much of water got on to the finger).” (Muslim)

The above example is distinct indicator of the absolute momentary nature of the life on earth as compared to the everlasting life in the Hereafter. Effectively, the time spent in this world is less than the wink of an eye. It is the firm belief of the Believer that the Hereafter is the final abode. It is thus only logical that most of our time and energy should be spent in making effort for a “softer life” for that permanent phase. It is also simple logic that the period of time spent on the fantasies of this short-lived life should be concomitant to the unbelievable short duration of life on earth: this ephemeral life is not even equal to the “blink of an eye”.

The hereafter is to continue ad infinitum (indefinitely). It will never be impacted by any stoppages, will be limitless to space, will be unaffected by changes in conditions like the experiences of this world. However, the best news is that, for those who brought abiding faith in Allah Ta’ala and His Rasool (Salallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) there will be unending happiness,
pleasure and contentment.

On two occasions Nabi (Salallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) made the following statement: “O Allah! There is no life except the life of the Hereafter.” (Allahumma laa Aisha illa Aishal Aakhira).

Once, was on the day of Al Azhab, and the other was on the day of Hajjatul Wida.

As a constant reminder, we too should read this wonderful couplet in our duas.
