‘Drug Awareness Drive’ programmes held in Verulam and Pietermaritzburg

Drug Awareness Drive

Team members of the ‘Drug Awareness Drive’ (DAD) initiative of Darul Ihsan Humanitarian Centre presented a series of educational programmes on drug and substance abuse at schools in Verulam and in the Pietermaritzburg, respectively.

On Friday, 18 January 2019 the ‘DAD’ team that visited Verulam comprised two senior Ulama viz., Maulana Zakaria Murchie, a drug and substance abuse researcher and specialist, Maulana Mohamed Ameer, a social counsellor and Abdul Saeed Shaik, a community activist.

Maulana Murchie focused on the harsh realities of drug and substance abuse in our society and Maulana Ameer focused on the destructive impact of this scourge on our families and communities. On Friday morning, two schools – the Verulam Secondary school and the Verulam Islamic school - were presented with talks by the DAD team followed by a Q and A session with the learners.

Staff members of both school expressed their appreciation to the DAD team for their initiative with requests for future programmes. On Saturday, 2 February 2019 two follow-up programmes were held in Verulam. An afternoon programme was held for females and an evening programme was held for the males.

On Friday, 8 February 2019 the DAD team comprising Ml Zakaria Murchie, Ml Mohamed Ameer, Ml Aslam Eshak and Hazrat Mufti Zubair Bayat - the Ameer of Darul Ihsan Humanitarian Centre - presented programmes in the Pietermaritzburg.

Schools visited were the Islamia Primary School, Al Khalil Islamic School, Maritzburg Muslim School for Girls and Madrasah Tarteel ul Quran. Educators at the schools and the Madrasah said they were ‘impressed’ by the talks presented and acknowledged the benefit of the DAD programme for their learners.

The DAD team, in coordination with five Masjid in Pietermaritzburg, also presented Jumuah lectures on the harsh realities of drug and substance abuse. Later in the day Hazrat Mufti Zubair Bayat presented a talk for the benefit of our sisters at the girl’s Madrasah in Pietermaritzburg.

On Friday evening the DAD team presented a programme at the Nizamia Hall which saw an overwhelming and positive public response. Darul Ihsan Humanitarian Centre thanks the communities of Verulam and Pietermaritzburg for their participation and hosting of the ‘Drug Awareness Drive’ programmes in their respective areas.

The impact of drug and substance abuse in our society is a very real, relentless and brutal phenomenon.

The DAD team strategizes its programme around ‘Drug Dynamics, Perspective, Analysis and Solutions’ - with visual presentation using slides and video clips - for the sole purpose and intention to help and educate our community.

May Allah Ta’ala accept this humble effort, make it easy for those whose lives are affected by the incidence of drug and substance abuse and protect our families and the Ummah.
