Israeli Apartheid week

Pro-Palestinians across the country are rallying together to organise a myriad of events aimed at highlighting Israel’s apartheid policies during a global awareness campaign in March.

The 9th international Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) takes place in South Africa between 11th and 17th March and is an annual international series of events held in over 250 cities, communities and campuses across the globe.

The week long campaign also serves to canvass support for the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel which seeks to bring an end to Israel's apartheid policies and violations of international law. "For us South Africans and our liberation, people of the world had mobilized in their hundreds of thousands - if not millions,” said BDS South Africa spokesperson Mohammed Desai.

At global level, a 15-member IAW International Coordinating Committee is responsible for facilitating IAW across the different regions of the world. In South Africa, the IAW South Africa Team, of which BDS South Africa is a primary member, is constituted of representatives from various South African cities, communities and university campuses. These IAW South Africa Team representatives are responsible for coordinating IAW events in their respective South African communities.

Students across various campuses will get involved, including Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Rhodes University, Stellenbosch University, University of Cape Town, University of Johannesburg, University of KwaZulu-Natal (Durban), University of KwaZulu-Natal (Pietermartizburg), University of Pretoria, and University of the Witwatersrand.

Within the local pro-Palestinian lobby, BDS South Africa, Coalition for a Free Palestine, the Muslim Students Association, Open Shuhada Street, Palestine Solidarity Alliance, Palestine Solidarity Campaign, South African Artists Against Apartheid, South African Municipal Workers Union, South African Students Congress, StopTheJNF and the Young Communist League of South Africa, will participate.
