MORE than R100 000 in cash and large quantities of drugs were seized after the Durban Metro Police Drugs Task Team conducted a joint operation with crime intelligence services in a massive drug bust during the Easter weekend.
The successful arrests include the apprehension of a 63-year-old alleged drug distributor for dealing in crack cocaine, cocaine, mandrax and ecstasy. A man was arrested in Mayville for the possession of drugs with the estimated street value of R38 0340. An undisclosed amount of cash was also confiscated during the raid. Police also raided the home of a suspected drug dealer in Hartvale Gardens in Phoenix where they seized drugs with the estimated street value of R10 000 and an undisclosed amount of cash.
In a separate incident, seven people who were arrested and charged for allegedly dealing and manufacturing drugs valued at about R50 million were granted bail in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on 9 April.
Members of the Provincial Organised Crime Unit and the eThekwini inner south cluster’s provincial Drug and Firearm Unit swooped on the alleged drug lab operating from a warehouse in Springfield Park and a house in Westville. National Police Spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said the suspects had been working on a machine producing capsules thought to contain heroin.
