The City’s newly recruited and existing lifeguards recently completed training which is in line with the new standards of the sector. This is a clear indication that the City priorities safety issues and wants to ensure there are no drowning incidents reported.
“We also appeal to bathers to swim within the allocated safety flags areas,” said Mayor Kaunda.
The festive season plan further unpacked the lifeguard’s developments programme, beach buddy plan, traffic and safety management, child-minders and recreational safety. Furthermore, to yield productivity at the beaches, new equipment such as tractors and speed boats have been procured and delivered just in time for festive season.
Head of the City’s Parks, Recreation and Culture UnitThembinkosi Ngcobo said: “EThekwini has had zero rate drowning incidents over the past three years and we aim to achieve the same this year. Incidents reported last year only occurred after working hours therefore we plead with swimmers to adhere to the rules for their own safety.”
