EThekwini Mayor commits to work with men’s sector to eradicate gender-based violence

ETHEKWINI Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has committed to work with the eThekwini Men’s Sector in eradicating the scourge of gender-based violence. Mayor Kaunda made the commitment during the sector’s monthly meeting which was held at the Pinetown Civic Centre on 9 December.

The eThekwini Men’s Sector is a non-profit organisation that seeks to address and eliminate violence perpetrated against women and children.

“Our sitting coincided with the 16 Days of Activism for no Violence Against Women and Children campaign. This sitting provided us with an opportunity to come up with proper plans and solutions that can be implemented,” said Mayor Kaunda.

The Mayor added that it is encouraging that the Men’s Sector is willing to work with the Mayor’s Office in addressing social ills and gender-based violence in communities.

“I have no doubt that our working relationship will go a long in advocating for women and children and their needs, social and economic growth and change the way men are portrayed in the community,” said Mayor Kaunda, who is also the Chairperson of the Provincial Men’s Forum.

The Chairperson of the eThekwini Men’s Sector Bhekimpi Mchunu said:

“The relationship between the eThekwini Men’s Sector and the Office of the Mayor was long overdue. We are excited that we will now work closely with the Mayor in moulding men that build proper family structures and stand up against the abuse of women and children.”
