“It is better to give a man a fishing rod once, than to give him fish everyday” - proverb

Guided and inspired by the above words of wisdom, Darul Ihsan Centre has undertaken a number of projects to empower and uplift people from the lower and non-income groups. Alhamdulillah, these empowerment projects have enabled mainly unemployed people to become self-reliant and self-sufficient, and is thereby contributing to the eradication of the problem of unemployment.

The “Tuck Shop Starter Pack” Project:

The “Tuck Shop Starter Pack” project aims to create business opportunities and to make people self-reliant. Grocery items are mainly provided as start-up capital for this project. After a thorough assessment is carried out, a person is assisted through this project to become self-reliant. Generally the tuck shop is conducted from the premises of the home of the recipient, however in cases where a tuck shop needs to be constructed in the front of the home, then this is also provided as part of this project.

The “Street Traders’ Starter Pack” Project:

Persons showing a desire and potential are screened and assessed and then assisted by giving them initial trading stock. These goods are given either to sell from door to door or for street vending.

The "Tradesman Empowerment" Project:

This special empowerment project is designed to empower tradesmen who may be experts or experienced in a particular field of work, but requiring equipment and raw materials such as welding, plumbing, electrical, etc.

The "Employment Placement" Project:

An absolutely free service is provided to job-seekers as well as businesses looking for staff. This is done via Darul Ihsan's Website by calling telephonically, by fax, email or skype. A number of people have used this useful service provided by the centre successfully.

The "Educate a Child" Project:

Education is the key in poverty eradication and empowerment. Thus, Darul Ihsan Centre places much emphasis and resources towards this project by assisting deserving pupils with school uniforms, stationary packs, textbooks and school fees.

Annually, the centre provides good quality stationary packs to a number of local schools for their most deserving and needy pupils. This year 3252 packs were distributed.

Besides the above, Darul Ihsan Centre provides in the region of 28000 sandwiches to 47 schools around Durban for the poorest of school children who cannot even afford to bring lunch to school. The number is growing, Alhamdulillah. Darul Ihsan also serves 48 pots of hot meals to the poorest in the community across the Durban metro.

The "Home Improvement" Project:

The "Home Improvement" Project targets low income home-owners in a bid to improve and make their dwellings liveable, especially those living in squalid and miserable living conditions. This includes basic improvements such as plastering walls or fixing floors, attending to leaks, removing dampness that may be the cause of future structural damage and also a health hazard for the children and family.
