As the years went on, more Muslim voices called for the application of Islamic principles to help the environment. This movement has come to be known as ‘Green Islam’.

Today, Indonesia remains a country that faces several severe environmental challenges such as air and marine pollution, deforestation, and sits amongst the world’s top ten emitters of greenhouse gases. However, the Green Islam movement helps encourage the youth at schools and across broader communities to better care for and be conscious of the planet.

Indonesia’s national mosque, Istiqlal, was environmentally certified by the International Finance Corporation in 2022, making it the world’s first place of worship to have received this award. It includes energy-saving lighting, solar panels, reflective paint for the exterior, and water reduction and recycling alternatives.

Other countries such as Morocco and Egypt have also contributed to the Green Islam initiative, building their own movements to improve both their internal and global ecological footprint.
