The Islam of Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (Radiyallahu Anhu)

Below is the incident of Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (Radiyallahu Anhu) embracing Islam:

Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (Radiyallahu Anhu) was a young lad, grazing the goats belonging to Uqbah bin Abi Mu’ait in the region of Makkah Mukarramah. One day, whilst he was grazing the goats, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hazrat Abu Bakr (Radiyallahu Anhu) passed by while they were fleeing from the Mushrikeen.

Since it was the custom of the Arabs to offer milk to the travellers and the wayfarers, on seeing the goats, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hazrat Abu Bakr (Radiyallahu Anhu) asked him to offer them some milk.
They said to him, “O youngster! Do you have any milk to offer us?” He replied, “Yes, there is milk, however these goats are a trust in my care, and I do not wish to give the milk to you.”

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) then said to him, “Bring me a she-goat which has not yet mated (i.e. it does not have any milk).” I thus brought a young she goat to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).

Hazrat Abu Bakr (Radiyallahu Anhu) held the goat before Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) then began to pass his blessed hands over its udders while reciting a portion of the Qur’aan Majeed and making dua to Allah Ta‘ala to grant milk. As Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) did this, the udders miraculously began to fill with milk.

Hazrat Abu Bakr (Radiyallahu Anhu) then brought a hollowed-out rock to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), after which he drew the milk into it, using it as a utensil. After milking the goat, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), Hazrat Abu Bakr (Radiyallahu Anhu) and Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (Radiyallahu Anhu) all drank from the milk.

Thereafter, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) commanded the udders of the animal to return to its former condition of not having any milk, and it immediately returned to its former condition.

Upon witnessing this miracle before his eyes, the heart of Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (Radiyallahu Anhu) was overwhelmed with the love of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). After a few days he came to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and accepted Islam.

At the time of accepting Islam, he said to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), “Teach me those words which you had recited at the time when you milked the animal which did not have milk in its udders.” Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) then passed his blessed hand over his head and said:

يرحمك الله فإنك غليم معلم

“May Allah Ta‘ala have mercy on you. You are a youngster that will have a bright future in the field of knowledge.” (Musnad Ahmad #3598)

In one narration, it is also mentioned that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) made dua for Allah Ta‘ala to bestow him with special barakah. (Saheeh Ibnu Hibbaan #6504, Munsnad Ahmed #4412, 3598 and Musnad Abu Ya’laa #5096)
