Brief Life Sketch of Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (Radiyallahu Anhu) - Part 6

Commentators say that he became very grieved at the loss of this bag on that day. (Mirqat Vol.11 Pg.77)

Piety

He was very pious, and loved very much to perform the Nafl Salat.

He had with him a bag full of date-stones. He used these stones for his Zikr. When the bag was exhausted, his maid filled it again with date-stones.

Hazrat Abu Nadhrah narrates that an old man from Bani Tufawah tribe related, “I was the guest of Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (Radiyallahu Anhu) in Madeenah Munawwarah and have never seen any of the Sahabah (Radiyallahu Anhum) exert themselves in Ibadah as much as he nor any of them who cared for his guests as much as he. During the time I spent with him, I one day saw him on his bench with a bag full of stones or date seeds. As he sat there reciting Tasbeehat, his Abyssinian slave woman sat nearby and whenever he completed what was in the bag, he gave it to her and she collected everything back. She then refilled the bag and gave it to him. (Abu Dawood #2174)

He used to recite 12 000 Istighfar daily. (Abu Nuaim in Hilyatul Awliya Vol.1 Pg.383)

He also had a Tasbeeh with a 2 000 knots and would not sleep until he had recited Subhanallah on each of them. (Hayatus Sahabah)

He divided the night into three portions between himself, his wife and his slave. When one completed performing Ibadah they would awaken the next one. When the second one was finished with Ibadah they would awaken the third one.
