Hazrat Maqburi reports that they were once with Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (Radiyallahu Anhu) when Hazrat Hasan (Radiyallahu Anhu) arrived and greeted them with Salaam. The people returned the greeting but Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (Radiyallahu Anhu) was unaware of what happened until someone said to him, “That was Hasan ibn Ali who greeted with Salaam.” Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (Radiyallahu Anhu) then went to meet Hazrat Hasan (Radiyallahu Anhu) and said, “Salaams to you Ya Sayyidi (O my leader).” When someone asked Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (Radiyallahu Anhu) why he had addressed Hazrat Hasan (Radiyallahu Anhu) as ‘Sayyidi’, Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (Radiyallahu Anhu) replied, “I testify that I heard

Rasulullah (ﷺ) say, ‘He is a Sayyid.’” (Hayatus Sahabah from Tabrani. Also narrated in Mustadrak lil Hakim)

Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (Radiyallahu Anhu) participated in these battles (between Hazrat Ali Radiyallahu Anhu and Hazrat Mu’awiyah Radiyallahu Anhu). He fought on behalf of Hazrat Ali (Radiyallahu Anhu) and also performed Salah behind him. However, at meal times he would go over to the dastarkhan of Hazrat Mua’wiyah (Radiyallahu Anhu) and partake of meals prepared there. It was not that he broke off all ties with him because of differences between them. Hazrat Mu’wiyah (Radiyallahu Anhu) was aware of this, but he did not prevent him nor chide him for partaking of the meals at his dastarkhan. Somebody then asked, “Why is it that you eat here, but perform your Salah over there?” He replied, “The Salah is better over there whilst the food is better over here.” (Malfoozaat of Faqeehul Ummah Hazrat Mufti Mahmood Hasan Gangohi Rahimahullah)
