He became the second great Khalifah of Islam and leader of the believers after the demise of Hazrat Abu Bakr t. He was martyred on 1st Muharram 24 A.H. His daughter Hazrat Hafsa (R) was married to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (R) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “There were those in the previous Ummahs who were divinely inspired. If there is anyone (with divine inspiration) in my Ummah it would be Umar.” (Bukhari, Muslim)
Hazrat Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (R) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said to Hazrat Umar (R) in a lengthy Hadith: “…by the oath of Allah, Shaytaan does not meet you on a street except that he moves away to another street.” (Bukhari, Muslim)
