Mother’s Name: Su’da bint Tha’labah

He was the freed slave and the beloved of Rasulullah r. He was the first slave to accept Islam and was the adopted son of Rasulullah r. He accompanied Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) to Taif when Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) wen to give them the message of Islam and was stoned. He married Umm Ayman (RA) who had brought Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) up. His son Usamah (R) was born from her. He also married the cousin of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) Hazrat Zainub bint Jahsh (RA) but this marriage didn’t work and they were divorced. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) later married her. He was made Shaheed (martyred) in the Battle of Moota when he was sent as the Ameer of the army in 8 A.H.

Virtues:

He is the only Sahabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) who is mentioned by name in the Quran Shareef, in Surah Ahzab (33) V.37. This is in reference to the divorce of Hazrat Zainub (RA) and the subsequent marriage to Rasulullah r.

He was the adopted son and was known as Zayd ibn Muhammad. Hazrat Abdullah ibn Umar y says, “We only used to call Zayd ibn Harithah Zayd ibn Muhammad until Verse 5 of Surah Ahzab was revealed wherein Allah says, ‘Call them by (the names of) their fathers, it is more just by Allah….’” (Bukhari & Muslim)

When Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) had appointed Hazrat Usama (R) as the Ameer of an army, people objected. When Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was informed about this he (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “If you find fault with him the (it is nothing new because) you found fault with the appointment of his father (Zayd) before him whereas by Allah, he was created to lead. Verily he was from among the most beloved to me. Verily this (boy – Usama) is the most beloved to me after him.” (Bukahri)

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said to Hazrat Zayd (R) on one occasion, “You are our brother and our freed slave.” (Bukhari)
