"It has come to the municipality's attention that some people deliberately tamper with traffic lights and use the direction of traffic as a business opportunity," eThekwini municipal spokesman Thabo Mofokeng said.

Last week, eThekwini metro police responded to a complaint about someone tampering with a traffic light.

"When the police approached, the culprit ran into the nearby informal settlement. Upon closer inspection, it was discovered that the robot box had been opened."

People tampering with robots and then directing traffic in a bid to get tips was an "increasing occurrence". He said it was a criminal offence to tamper with traffic lights.
